Protect or Unlock PDF

PDF · PASSWORD · AES-256

Add an open password and printing, copying or editing restrictions to a PDF with AES-256, or remove a password you know. Nothing is uploaded.

Your files and passwords stay in this browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored on a server.@cantoo/pdf-lib (MIT) · pdf.js (Apache-2.0)

Good to know. There's no password recovery or cracking. Print/copy restrictions need the permissions password to remove. Adding or removing a password invalidates digital signatures, and some unusual encryption types may not be supported.

HOW TO

How to use

  1. Drop a PDF and the tool first tells you whether it is protected.
  2. To protect: enter the open password twice, choose what to allow (printing, copying, editing) and set a permissions password if anything is restricted.
  3. To unlock: enter the password you know. A PDF with printing or copying restrictions needs its permissions password. A wrong password only shows an error.
  4. Press the save button and the resulting PDF downloads right away.

FAQ

FAQ

Can it unlock a PDF whose password I forgot?

No. It only removes protection when you enter the correct password you already know. There is no guessing, trying many passwords or cracking, and a wrong password only shows an error.

Are my files or passwords uploaded?

No. Protecting and unlocking both happen inside your browser, and files and passwords are never sent or stored anywhere.

What's the difference between the open and permissions passwords?

The open password is asked for when the PDF is opened. The permissions (owner) password is needed to change or remove printing, copying and editing restrictions. Restrictions are honored by PDF viewers, and some programs may ignore them.

Does the open password also remove printing or copying restrictions?

No. A PDF with printing, copying or editing restrictions is only saved without protection when you enter its permissions (owner) password. With just the open password, the tool tells you the permissions password is needed and creates no file.
